It is intresting to know why in such a technical sport as sailing, some old classes of yachts can survive despite the rapidly developing technologies and materials.
There is no clear answer – apparently, each case has its own reasons.
Take for example the Dragon class yachts.
First of all, we should note the excellent and “time-resistant” design of the sailboat and its extremely beautiful shape. The class started with a competition organized by the Royal yacht club in Gothenburg, with the goal of finding a cheap skerry sailboat suitable for young people.
The competition was won by Johan Anker, an outstanding Norwegian designer and yachtsman.
He won two Olympic golds – in 1912 in the 12-meter class and in 1928 in the 6-meter class. It is interesting to note that in the Amsterdam Olympic regatta of 1928, the Estonian yacht Tutti V of Nikolai Vekshin competed with Johan Anker in the 6-meter class and won a bronze medal.
